No Sight, Sound or Touch

Eight weeks ago, there was no design knowledge to inform the senses how to function and produce in this realm.

The designer was dormant among piles and boxes of stuff.

But in this darkness, a guiding voice emerged.

With new language she was able to listen to what the materials had to say.

Bending, glueing and slashing she could feel the work emerge.

Rhino Work

In just 8 weeks I learned how to use basic functions in Rhino. The intent is to render the abstract sculpture into an object. In my case, the sculpture became a survival kit.

Parts:

  1. shovel

  2. silicone mold to hold the shovel

  3. Parachord (to fasten the kit)

  4. LED ball

  5. Garmin watch

  6. Alcohol bottle

Additional elements:

magnesium strip, flint, iodine pills

How to Think It

First Assignments

It all starts with drawing a line. Like a mark in the sand with a stick. Forming straight lines enforced balance in the work.

Finding David

Then you move to the next step, perhaps trying to find the spine of the work. Some would say you will be able to perceive an axis. Running thru your work like a spine holding everything together. Searching for balance, structure and defining power hierarchies could bring one on the path to the core. Try and fail. Try and fold. Make straight sharp lines with intention and flow. At some point, some call challenge. Some simply see it as adding the final touch that somehow brings the whole work together. Just a simple direction. That’s all.

Figures

Then you’re teasing out shapes, play with forms. Growing off the 2D line, you feel through all the volumes. Rectilinear, point of balance, weight and force. See how you get them all speaking out in harmony. It should please the eye and compliment form.

Sculpting

Stretching into the idea, or the challenge, you expand in 4-5 ways at once. But in all you will one thing emerging. One element present in all.

Design Alone

Know what’s there and try to feel it. Touch it, flick it to listen, see the dance of your bodies’ force interacting with each and all parts.

Rhino Progress

One of the viable options, would then be to make such an object, that carries all traits through and through.
